Nesoglasie – The Meaning of Life

Artists: Nesoglasie  Maxim Pich
Genres: alternative
Keywords: Saint Petersburg

Несогласие (Saint Petersburg) translates to disagreement. Linguistically related to соглашаться / согласиться (the verbs for agreeing, being in agreement); also, the word for consonant (согласная) is easy to recognize in the band name. You could even call it Counter-Consonant.

Question and Answer

Смысл means meaning, жизни (from жизнь) means of life. So, The Meaning of Life is just two words. And it’s the title of this song. It begins (after the guitar) with

И я не знаю, что будет завтра
   Может, завтра я умру.
А может быть, всё будет круто
   Смысл жизни я найду.

And I don’t know what tomorrow will bring
   Maybe I’ll die tomorrow.
Or maybe everything will be cool
I’ll find the meaning of life.

For now, the outlook seems bleak:

   Я пью дешевый алкоголь
   – на другое денег больше нет,
   Поглощая вина литры
   я хочу найти ответ.

   I drink cheap alcohol
   – there’s no more money for anything else,
   Consuming liters of wine
I want to find the answer.

That might be hard, though, because the questions aren’t simple. Like почему солнце надо мною (why the sun above me) and почему боимся смерти (why we fear death) но желания жить нет (but there’s no desire to live). Everything will only change (всё измениться тогда лишь) when I find the answer (когда я найду ответ).

There’s not much to see in the video, but there’s also a live version with poor sound (2019, 3 min) and a full Concert in Moscow (2019, 101 min). For fans, there’s also a cover version by Mikhail Trepkov (with a hat on his head). Ajay Joshi (in his socks) is still practicing.

Everything’s Fine

Смысл жизни is from Всё в порядке, всё пройдёт (Everything’s fine, everything will pass, 2017). Title track here, and also a live version (2019). Plus a cover (2020) that’s visually в порядке (fine), by Maxim Pich.

The 25-Year Career of Zemfira

Anyone who wants to present Russian music cannot ignore Zemfira. Popular and mainstream – millions of records sold – but also distinctly idiosyncratic. The music is usually accessible (we categorize it under Pop), but the attitude is rock.

Punk against Putin: Criminal State – Путин

Raw Anti-Putin punk from Nizhny Novgorod / Нижний Новгород. Loosely based on ‘Maggie’ by The Exploited.

The Retuses 3x

From the green city of Zelenograd / Зеленоград. Dreamy indie-folk with a melancholic undertone. Created by Mikhail Rodionov (1992).

Wolves in the Shooting Range (Волки в тире)

The alarm blares (Ревёт тревога), the road awaits (ждёт дорога). They are many (Их немало), we are few (нас немного). We are in an unjust world (Мы в несправедливом мире) tin wolves in the shooting range (Жестяные волки в тире).

Offret 3x

The word offret is Swedish and means ‘sacrifice’; the band Offret is Russian and makes heavy music. The link between the word and the band: a 1986 film in Swedish by the Russian Andrei Tarkovsky.

До свиданья, дорогая!

A band from Saint Petersburg that makes a kind of post-punk/indie-pop. Not for long yet, so not much material yet. However, they already have a few very successful tracks with original music videos. До свиданья, дорогая is the Russian title for the film The Goodbye Girl (1977), but it has nothing to do with it.
