The corona song in the Netherlands was not a success, to put it mildly. Let’s not waste more words on it. If you’re curious, you can listen to Peter Pannekoek again. How can you be cynical about contributing to good causes? In this case, how could you not.

Virusnaya

In Russia, they took a different approach. At least, that’s what Semjon Slepakov (Семен Слепаков) and Dzhavid Kurbanov (Джавид Курбанов) did, with Вирусная. Clip below – watch and listen. Be sure to check out Russian lesson with a Corona song on Russia in Words and Pictures, about Semjon and the k**-virus. Egbert Hartman opens with: ‘Look, bunch of dumb Dutch celebrities, with your sappy corona song, this is how you do it. And next time, check out the Russians (and listen) before you open your mouths.’
There was applause for this.

100% True

The combination of corona and humor may not be a very fortunate one. You could also argue that jokes are especially needed in a crisis. And they are always allowed. ‘Why Russians don’t get Coronavirus! 100% True’ (Виталя Альбатрос): decide for yourself if it’s funny.

YouTube comment: ‘What doesn’t kill you, makes you Russian’. Absolutely true.

Self-Isolation

Like everywhere else, in Russia, there were many performances from home. Often about home quarantine or самоизоляция (self-isolation). That rhymes with демобилизация (demobilization), and that’s a track by Сектор Газа (Sektor Gaza).

Below is a version of it, by Дудки вам!. They also did Карантин, карантин, сиди дома один (Quarantine, quarantine, stay home alone), Десять москвичей на карантине (Ten Muscovites in quarantine), and more in that style.

Turning Самоизоляция into Демобилизация – the same idea came to Корсика, Палата №6, and Radio Tapok. The latter also did Песня про Коронавирус, Обнуление, Обвал рубля (Song about coronavirus, obnulenie, ruble crash).

The Moon Doesn’t Know

The rules during home isolation were strict (though they weren’t enforced by lions). You could only go out for essentials, and to walk the dog. But you can’t stop a Russian who wants to smoke, even with a knife in his back (see Mirror or Metro, 2019). And nobody said it had to be a real dog.

This video went viral and even appeared on Dumpert (03-04-2020). The original is a TikTok video by КубикG55. The music accompanying it is Луна не знает пути (The Moon Doesn’t Know the Way) by Тайпан and Agunda.

Harmony

But back to corona songs. Here are three remarkable ones, from calm to wild.

This one is worth mentioning for its originality, and because group video sessions rarely turn out well. This one does achieve harmony. Members of the Московский Казачий Хор (Moscow Cossack Choir) perform together “Конь” (Horse). Выйду в поле с конем: I’ll go into the field with a horse.

Corona Speech

A corona speech by Putin as sample material, set to ‘Uno’ by Little Big. With a дисклеймер (disclaimer) at the start, saying the only goal was humor, not to offend anyone. All we want (всё, что мы хотим) is to make your day a little brighter (сделать ваш день чуточну веселее). Don’t forget to wash your hands (не забывайте мыть руки) and go out less often (поменьше выходите из дома).

Unorthodox

Collective Babooshka is less concerned about offending anyone. Techno-industrial shock rock (or however you describe it) that most babushkas won’t appreciate. Most orthodox believers won’t either. Православный карантин: Orthodox quarantine. Бог с табой, ты не один: God is with you, you are not alone.

Lyrics are shown in the video.

More

From Azerbaijan comes this Шуточная песня про карантин (Funny Song about Quarantine). Коронавирус уходи: coronavirus, go away! Artur Sarkisyan (Артур Саркисян) also says “go away” to the virus. With lyrics, with video, and with a magic flute. So far, it hasn’t helped much.

Corny and sweet is this Между нами карантин (Quarantine Between Us), and hardly bearable is Карантин by Kartashow. You’ll be happy when Show must go on is over, but it can always get worse.

Slightly better are Рашн Карантин (creative, by RASA) and Песня про карантин (самоизоляция) (about losing your mind at home, by Пухниченко).

But it all sucks, this whole corona thing, and most of the corona music too.

Music

The 25-Year Career of Zemfira

Anyone who wants to present Russian music cannot ignore Zemfira. Popular and mainstream – millions of records sold – but also distinctly idiosyncratic. The music is usually accessible (we categorize it under Pop), but the attitude is rock.

Punk against Putin: Criminal State – Путин

Raw Anti-Putin punk from Nizhny Novgorod / Нижний Новгород. Loosely based on ‘Maggie’ by The Exploited.

The Retuses 3x

From the green city of Zelenograd / Зеленоград. Dreamy indie-folk with a melancholic undertone. Created by Mikhail Rodionov (1992).

Wolves in the Shooting Range (Волки в тире)

The alarm blares (Ревёт тревога), the road awaits (ждёт дорога). They are many (Их немало), we are few (нас немного). We are in an unjust world (Мы в несправедливом мире) tin wolves in the shooting range (Жестяные волки в тире).

Offret 3x

The word offret is Swedish and means ‘sacrifice’; the band Offret is Russian and makes heavy music. The link between the word and the band: a 1986 film in Swedish by the Russian Andrei Tarkovsky.

До свиданья, дорогая!

A band from Saint Petersburg that makes a kind of post-punk/indie-pop. Not for long yet, so not much material yet. However, they already have a few very successful tracks with original music videos. До свиданья, дорогая is the Russian title for the film The Goodbye Girl (1977), but it has nothing to do with it.
